I am trying to grow Calla Lilies indoors. How can I make them bloom year round? Is it even possible?

The reason for growing indoors is that I live in a Zone 2! and Callas are Zoned for 8-10.

Callas do not bloom year round, and they do not bloom well if it is too hot.


For instance I live in Massachusetts. My callas are removed from the pots to rest in June, and I replant them in September, and by November 1 they are blooming in my house. My home is kept at 62* all day while I go to work, but the sun can continue to warm it to 68* and my Callas are at the Sunniest Side of the house in a ceiling to floor window, plenty of winter sun and heat.


Summer sun and heat are the enemy.
Reply:I live in zone 5 and have alot of luck with Calla lilies. Many varieties are semi-hardy to zone 4. To grow indoors, I suggest using a large pot with lots of good soil and remember not to plant them too deep. Since they do not need to be protected from frost in doors, the tubers should be just visible at soil level. When they start to sprout, they love lots of sun and heat...good luck
Reply:A lot of bulbs have higher zones that is why people like me (montana zone 4) put them in pots during the summer,let them bloom and than take them indoors during the winter and put them in a peat mixture to let them rest and when spring comes start all over again. I know some people put them in pots and just let them freeze and then buy new ones in the spring. I really dont think you can have them bloom all year because it is a bulb or a tuber and most of these kind of plants do need a resting period like winter. I have just started pulling mine out from the basement and planting them.They are a beautiful flower it would be nice if you could have them all year.
Reply:They do not bloom year-round - you can %26#039;force%26#039; the bulbs at different times of the year by making them think they are dormant then making them think it%26#039;s Spring. You will, of course, need several bulbs to do this.
