How to introduce a new dog to a cat?

Hey there, my husband and I have had just one kitty for a little over a year now since she was a kitten so shes our baby. She is an indoor cat, so she doesnt know much about the real world outside. One time we wanted to get another cat and when we brought it home Lily (our current cat) got so scared and went into attack mode, it was really scary and we automatically decided against getting the second cat.

We have always wanted a dog and our friend wants to give us her american eskimo dog, so cute and relatively small. we are just scared as to how lilly will react and what is the best way to go about this ?? because the inside of our home is like her territory maybe we should introduce them outside?? thanks for any help.

How to introduce a new dog to a cat?
Introducing them outside is a better idea as it%26#039;s on neutral ground, slowly begin putting the dogs things (blanket etc) inside the house to get the smell inside and vice versa with the cats things. Slowly Lilly should get used to the dog smell.

Good luck!
Reply:When I moved in with my bf I had to introduce his dog to my two cats. Also, since we have been together, we have acquired another dog and another cat. The good way to do this is to get the cat used to the smell first. Give your friend a towel or blanket to let the dog sleep on, then bring it home for your cat to get used to the smell. When you get the dog home, keep him confined to one room. Gradually introduce them by letting your cat see him while he is in the dog crate (I am assuming he has one - if not, you should consider getting one for this purpose). Once they get used to seeing each other while crated, you can start to introduce them outside the crate for short periods. Keep in mind, there still may be some aggression. It has actually never resolved 100% with my pets since sometimes the dogs insist on sniffing the cat%26#039;s bottoms and the cats get really mad.

Gradually introducing them like this is probably the safest way to go. Fear-fear aggression is common in these situations, so it is not really fair to call your cat or the other animal %26quot;aggressive%26quot; since they can exhibit unusual levels of aggression when placed in a fearful situation. Vets tend to have a library of articles for these occasions, so asking your vet for a %26quot;how-to%26quot; article on introducing new pets may also be a good start.
Reply:Is the dog going to be an inside dog? Is the dog good with cats? I have both and have been in this situation and I have always let my cat be the ALPHA pet because of my fear that the new dog would hurt the cat. I introduce them INSIDE the house, since that is the cat%26#039;s territory. I hold the cat and let the dog come up and introduce himself to the cat. If the dog is too %26quot;interested%26quot;, I let the dog know, in a stern, loud voice, that the kitty is not to be hurt. I let them sniff until the cat gets bored and climbs up on something that the dog can%26#039;t reach and just watches the dog. Since the inside of your home is the cat%26#039;s territory, the cat will usually let the dog know what she will tolerate and what she won%26#039;t. This will probably involve a few hisses, and several swats with open claws and yelps from the dog, but usually, the dog will understand fairly quickly, that the cat is %26quot;top dog%26quot; and not to be messed with. It is not a good idea to leave the two of them together in the house if you go out or to go to work until you are certain that the cat can take care of herself. I would initially separate them when you are not going to be there to supervise. If the dog continues to be too interested in the cat, you might want to reconsider and get a puppy, which is much easier to integrate into the situation than an adult dog.

Good Luck!
Reply:She will eventually get used to the dog. It may take a couple weeks but it will be OK. My dog is kinda scared of my kitties but in the morning they play together and it is so cute to watch. Good Luck but go ahead and get that dog. You won%26#039;t be sorry.
Reply:Cats are vicious and territorial animals, weather is a baby or another animal they will always react the same way. If you realy want the dog you will just have to let the dog take charge by not allowing the cat to attack him. After a while the cat will figure out that he is not tougher than the dog and will eventually just keep to himself, but if the dog is a puppy you are going to have to either get rid of the cat or make some sort of enclosed pen in your house untill the dog is big enough to fight back, four months will do. Good luck
Reply:Put them in a small room together ( a bathroom is good, easy to clean up afterward) for about an hour. They%26#039;ll work it out.
Reply:if they are not raised together from a baby age, it is hard!! you know cat%26#039;s rule the house, so they think, dogs and cats are usually not compatible, but try the outdoor, get together try. We have a very large Great Dane and a Cat that thinks she is a dog!! really, they get along great. I just got lucky on that one!!
Reply:Hiya stina

Your cat will learn to like other pets you bring into your home

at 1st she will spit, claw, meow, try to jump out of the window, try and climb the walls, anything to get away, the answer, she will get over it, the more you separate the dog from your cat, the longer it will take for her to get used to your new puppy, dont let the pup run after her, cats are Very inquisitive, when the pup is sleeping she will sniff him/her, she might even give the pup a good boxing, its like all things Stina just take things slowly, your cat will come round, and more than likely end up playing together, i have 4 cats and 3 dogs, and they all sleep together, eat together, and play, its so funny watching the pups with dobbie (our male cat) he runs rings round the pups, and if the pups get out of hand, dobbie will just jump out of the way, he always gets his own back on them though lol lol..

Don%26#039;t be put off, your cat will sulk, she has had you and your husband all to her self, now she has to learn how to share, and she will have a new friend to play with ........ :-)
